Boat Culture as Island Identity
Guam, Micronesia,Thailand, Greenland, Russia, Greece
Island identity is indelibly linked to the water. The relationship between humans and their island environment is manifested through the boats they build and the culture that surrounds these boats. This includes boat utilization, boat-building and ceremonies/taboos/rites surrounding these vessels. I will travel to small island communities around the globe to learn about differences in boat culture and how these differences relate to island identity as a universal concept. I will also explore the ways in which this sense of identity is changing in response to climate change and globalization.
