The Art of Making Home
Iceland, Scotland, Portugal, Mongolia, and Tanzania
I see climate change and over-consumption as symptoms of our lost connection with nature. The current American model of private property and single-family home ownership often insulates us from a humbling awareness of our vulnerability and reliance on one another and our natural surroundings. I am in search of a new model of home. During my year as a Watson Fellow, I will journey to intentional communities that span over three generations of evolution; I will then go further back in human history to experience traditions of some of humankind’s oldest cultures. I have chosen five distinct destinations that have a strong sense of community and connection to landscape. I aim to reveal how to effectively re-kindle a community connection to nature through the artful making of a home.
