Defeating Depression: Perceptions and Treatments

Depression, intangible by its nature as a mental illness, leaves ample room for interpretation. The term has been plagued by stigma, discrimination, and disbelief. Recently, advocates around the world have been exposing the biological underpinnings of depression and working to reduce stigma associated with the illness. During my Watson year I will investigate the perception of depression and the practice of treatment in some of the most densely populated and rural areas of the world.
