Reconciling With The Diamond (A Girl’s Best Friend)
Curaçao, Dominican Republic, Australia, Japan
In the United States, women have been formally kicked off baseball diamonds three times. First, in the late 19th century, next, when men returned home after World War II, and most recently with the Title IX mandate of equal funding for men's baseball and women's softball. I want a reconciliation with the baseball diamond. During my Watson year, I will immerse myself in international baseball communities in order to work and live amid the nurturing relationships inherent to baseball. During my Watson year, I will explore (1) gender issues in a male-dominated game; (2) close and intergenerational relationships inherent to baseball communities; (3) an allegedly slow game existing in an ever-quickening age.
