Islands, Isolation, and Ice: Experiencing Agriculture in Extreme Locations
Tristan Da Cunha, Australia, Finland
From the isolation of the world’s most remote inhabited island to an Australian cattle ranch that is larger than some American states to a small farm in the Arctic Circle, I will travel to communities that farm and ranch in remote areas and utilize very different agricultural mechanisms to work with the environment. Since these communities have few economically or environmentally viable alternatives, they sustain their viable livelihoods through holistic management out of necessity rather than to fit the newest trend in farming. I will explore the cultural, political, economic, and environmental perspectives of these communities as they have adapted within the bounds of their challenging environments.
