Exhibitions and Empathy: Curating Contemporary Art as Living Heritage
United Arab Emirates, Norway, Ecuador, Senegal, China
Contemporary art is often described as belonging to an unworldly realm of its own, but culture's roots stretch deep into the ground. As a Watson Fellow I will attend five Biennials, touristic exhibitions which recur every other year, questioning their representations of heritages outside of the dominant canon of Western Art and their impact on local arts communities. Collaborating with artists and curators, I will organize exhibitions that illustrate a sense of place, exploring the relationships that artists have with their backgrounds and my role in communicating their contexts.
