Diasporic Chinese Community: Identity and Belonging Through Space
China, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, The United Kingdom, France, Belgium
Historically, Chinatowns were created as diasporic safe havens in cities for migrants facing discrimination following sociopolitical turmoil. However, as China rose as a world power, these once crucial Chinatowns were flattened into caricatures of Chinese culture. Working with cultural institutions and engaging with everyday residents, I will explore how Chinatowns function today for diasporic Chinese communities.
