Exploring Identity Through Folktales
Japan, New Zealand, Finland
Folktales provide a window into the past and examine the cultural and moral reasons behind a community's beliefs. My Watson year explores the relationship between folktales and identity formation in Japanese, Maori, and Sami communities. Documenting traditional storytelling practices, I seek to understand how these communities preserve their cultural and ethnic identities, and where their commonalities and differences lie.
